My friend Angel from Baby Toting Mama is here to share a fun (yet, possibly messy) glitter kids DIY project with us. I admit it – I love glitter and all things sparkly, but wow does it get all over the place. Last year in one week had projects with glitter, minky fabric and burlap – I think I’m still finding remnants of those materials around my sewing room to this day no matter how much vacuuming I do!
Ok, ok…so it is the kids who are crazy for glitter – not me. I despise working with glitter. It gets everywhere and you will be finding it for DAYS! However no one can argue with the fact that it adds such a pretty element to projects. So I gave in and decided to use it for this project.
The supply list is pretty small which is always nice!
- canvas
- paint
- vinyl or chipboard
- paint
- Mod Podge
- glitter
That’s it! This is a great project to help kids with their sensory skills as they have some sensory fun with the different textures of the canvas, paint and glitter.
The first step is to pick a color to paint your canvas. We chose white, red and green. Once dried (will take at least a few hours – you could always paint the night before and let dry overnight) do a layer of Mod Podge. This will create a barrier for when you use your stencil. While the Mod Podge was drying I cut my stencils. I am lucky enough to have a Silhouette Cameo and used some scrap vinyl to whip them up pretty quickly.
Another method you could use is to draw your shape on a piece of cardboard and cut it out.
Next you want to weed out the pieces that will be glitter in your final product. Place your stencils on the canvases and make sure the edges are pressed down to prevent any bleeding.
Brush on a layer of Mod Podge over your stencil and dump the glitter on. Let it dry for a few hours. I choose to only allow my 4 year old to do this part and to hand-over-hand the glitter part in hopes of keeping the mess down.
Once the glue is dry gently peel the stencil off and TADA!!! The finished project looks so pretty it is hard to know a 4 year old helped! Use them around the house to decorate for the holidays – they are so cute we used them with our stocking holders!
As a warning I will say do NOT add a thin layer of sealant to the top. When I brushed it on some of the left over glitter stuck to the brush and smeared all over the canvas. You could try to use the spray on sealer if you want to try and keep all the glitter in one place, but you will want to use that outside or in a very well ventilated area.
Are you ready for a fun glitter holiday project with your kids?
