Tis the season for Christmas songs…and Idina Menzel’s new CD Holiday Wishes is one that you will want to have in your collection!
It’s entirely possible that you first heard of Idina Menzel due to her most recent role of the singing voice of Elsa in Disney’s smash hit Frozen in which she sings the Oscar-winning song “Let It Go.” But, many know her from her role as Elphaba in Wicked and as Rachel Berry’s mom on Glee. In fact, Idina’s career spans stage, film, television, and music. After her performance of the multi-platinum song at the 86th annual Academy Awards, she made history as the first person with both a Billboard Top 10 hit and a Tony Award for acting. Idina currently stars as Elizabeth in the original Broadway production of If/Then. Her voice is simply amazing, and I have enjoyed listening to this album several times already!
Despite the fact that the songs on this album are classics and have been sung by so many artists, Idina’s versions are unique and, to me, a jazzy sound. Holiday Wishes was produced by Grammy Award-winner Walter Afanasieff (known for his work with Barbara Streisand, Celine Dion and Mariah Carey). While the album does feature many holiday classics, you will also find “December Prayer”, “River” (one of her favorites), and “When You Wish Upon a Star.”
“December Prayer” is an absolutely beautiful song! The lyrics are very touching – right from the very beginning.
In the touch of a friend, in the breath of a child,
In the eyes of a soldier coming home to his mother’s grateful smile,
In the sight of falling snow, and the memories it brings,
In the season when you find some peace, in the simple tender things,
Open your heart and look around, listen listen
I love the rendition of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” that she does with Michael Bublé – it is simply two great voices together perfectly! If you watched the Christmas show on TV the other night from Rockefeller Center you were treated to seeing and hearing them perform it together live.
